Taking out coverage for illness ensures you will receive a sickness benefit (‘Ziektewet-uitkering’) if you are unable to work due to illness. You can receive this benefit for up to 2 years, although the exact duration will depend on your situation.
If you do fall ill, be sure to inform us of this by calling our helpline for individuals no later than the second day of illness. Starting from the third day, you will receive 70% of the amount you are covered for. The first 2 days are considered waiting days (‘wachtdagen’). If you provide home help (‘dienstverlener aan huis’), a waiting period of at least 6 weeks applies.
Our coverage for occupational disability ensures you will receive a WIA benefit if you are unable to work because of your disability. You can apply for this benefit after 88 weeks of being unfit for work, but only if it is clear that you will not be able to return to work anytime soon.
Keep in mind you will only start receiving this benefit after you have been unable to work for 2 years. This means if you have coverage for occupational disability, but not for illness, you could be left without a source of income for the first 2 years that you are unable to work.
Taking out coverage for unemployment ensures you will receive an unemployment benefit if you find yourself out of work. This type of coverage is only available if you provide home help or work abroad under specific conditions.
If you have taken out this type of coverage and then become unemployed, you will first need to apply for an unemployment benefit with us. For the first 2 months of unemployment, you will receive 75% of the amount you are covered for. This will then drop to 70% from the third month onwards.
If you take out voluntary income protection coverage, there is a limit to how much you can take out. Your coverage cannot be higher than the average daily income you would lose if you were to become ill, develop an occupational disability or become unemployed. Additionally, even if you are earning more, you cannot be covered for more than €274.44 gross per day in 2024.
The price of your coverage will depend on the premium rates set for that year. The premium rate (‘premie’) is a percentage of the average daily income you are covered for. The number of working days in a month also affect the total cost of your coverage. To get an estimate of your monthly costs if you were to take out coverage, use our premium calculator (‘rekenhulp’).
- You will not need to have a medical assessment to take out coverage with us.
- You can claim tax deductions on your income tax return (‘aangifte inkomstenbelasting’) for premiums for illness and occupational disability coverage.
- You will not be charged any administration fees.
- You can cancel your policy at any time.
- If you become ill, develop an occupational disability or become unemployed, you will not be required to pay premiums for the specific coverage you are receiving during that time. This only applies to the full weeks (a week being Monday to Friday) in which you are receiving a benefit related to your specific coverage.
If you have taken out coverage with us, you must report any changes that could affect this coverage. This includes changes to your contact details or personal situation, as well as any adjustments you want to make to your policy.
To cancel your policy, use the same form that you would to report any changes to us. We will cancel your policy as soon as we receive your form. Make sure you cancel your policy on time. This is important as any premiums paid will not be refunded.
