You can claim your travel expenses in the following situations:
- You have been invited to visit us for an appointment and your outward journey is 15 kilometres or more. We calculate the distance from the address we have on file for you.
- You need support to travel due to a disability or medical reasons and you have been invited to visit us for an appointment. In this case, no minimum journey length applies.
- You have received our permission to attend a training course at our expense.
You will not be able to claim travel expenses if any of the following applies to you:
- You visit an UWV location without an appointment.
- You are invited to an UWV location for an expert opinion ('deskundigenoordeel').
- You are invited to an UWV location to apply for an unemployment benefit because your employer is insolvent and cannot pay your wages (‘betalingsonmacht’).
- You have objected to an UWV decision. If you are invited to an UWV location for an appointment about this, you can only claim your travel expenses if we find that your objection is valid.
- You are working for an employer on a trial placement ('proefplaatsing'). If so, your employer might cover your travel expenses, depending on the agreements you have made with the employer.
If you have difficulties travelling to an appointment due to a disability or for medical reasons, you might be eligible to claim disability-related travel expenses (‘aangepaste vergoeding’). If you need more information, call the UWV helpline.
Please note: If you would like to claim disability-related travel expenses, do so before your appointment otherwise we might not be able to approve your application.
Claiming disability-related travel expenses for taxi journeys
If you are unable to travel by public transport but you can travel by taxi, you might be entitled to have the costs covered. Submit the receipt from your taxi journey to us during your appointment.
Claiming disability-related travel expenses for a private vehicle
If, for medical reasons, you are travelling with your own transport then no minimum travel distance applies and you will be able to claim € 0.23 per kilometre.
If you need to bring someone with you to an appointment
If you cannot travel alone due to a disability or for medical reasons, and you need to bring someone to your appointment, they might be entitled to claim travel expenses too.
Please note: If you are both travelling by public transport then you can apply for an OV-Begeleiderskaart from the NS (‘Nederlandse Spoorwegen’) for your companion. This pass allows one person to travel with you free of charge. You can use the pass on almost all trains, metros, trams and buses.
In some cases, we will cover other expenses. For example, lost income due to travelling to an appointment with us, or overnight expenses. Please remember to submit all supporting documents with your application.
Ask about claiming your travel expenses during your appointment with us. You will be given a form to fill in. You can also download the travel expenses claim form (‘Verzoek reiskostenvergoeding’) and bring it with you to the appointment. To fill in the form, you will need your bank account number and your citizen service number (‘BSN’).
If you are entitled to have your travel expenses covered, you will be paid for the costs of the outward and return journey, regardless of the type of transport you use. We calculate the number of kilometres you have travelled via the quickest route by using the ANWB Routeplanner. We will pay € 0.23 per kilometre.
If we approve your claim for travel expenses we will transfer the amount to your bank account within 4 weeks.
