Applying for paid parental leave if you are a private carer or director and majority shareholder

If you are a private carer or provide home help (‘Alfahulp’) and work less than 4 days a week, or if you are a director and a majority shareholder (‘DGA’), you might be entitled to paid parental leave (‘betaald ouderschapsverlof’). This is something you will need to arrange yourself.

How to apply for paid parental leave

To apply, log in to Mijn UWV using either your DigiD account or a valid European electronic ID (‘Europees erkend inlogmiddel’). Once you have logged in, click on ‘Aanvragen’ (‘Apply’) in the left menu and select the tile for paid parental leave (‘uitkering betaald ouderschapsverlof’). Click on the ‘Apply’ button in that tile.

When to apply for paid parental leave

You will need to wait until you have taken at least 1 whole week of paid leave before applying. Do not apply any later than 1 year and 3 months after the first day of paid leave. Otherwise, you will not qualify for the full amount.

Keep in mind that you can only apply for the benefit in whole working weeks. For example, if you normally work 5 days a week and take 1 day a week of paid parental leave, you will be able to apply for the benefit after 5 weeks. That is the equivalent of 1 working week of paid parental leave.

What you will need when applying for paid parental leave

    • the child’s date of birth
    • the date on which the paid parental leave began
    • the amount of paid leave you have taken
    • the average number of hours you work per week
    • your bank account number

Please note: You will need to provide a copy of your employment contact in order for us to process your application. If your contract does not state the amount of hours you work per week, you will need to submit documents with this information. Please wait for a letter explaining how you can submit the documents to us.

Decision about your paid parental leave

You will receive a decision within 4 weeks of us receiving your application.

    How much will you receive?

The paid parental leave benefit is based on 70% of the national minimum wage (‘wettelijk minimuum loon’) for those who are 21 years and older. This amount will be based on the average number of hours you work per week and cannot be more than 40 hours.

    Payment of paid parental leave

You can choose whether to receive the benefit in one go or in instalments.

How to receive the benefit payment in one go

If you would like to receive the payment all at once, apply for the benefit after you have taken all of your paid leave. This will allow you to submit a payment request as part of your application. This request will be for the entire benefit.

How to receive the benefit payment in instalments

To receive the payment in instalments instead, apply for the benefit after you have taken at least 1 whole week of paid leave. This will allow you to submit the request as part of your application and will also count as your first payment request.

You can send up to 2 more payment requests for the remaining instalments. To do so visit Mijn UWV and log in with your DigiD.
