If the parent is employed, we usually make the payment to the employer after the employee’s leave has ended. The employer can receive the gross amount (‘brutobedrag’) in 1 payment or in instalments.

Receiving the amount in 1 payment

The employer can apply for paid parental leave once the employee has taken all the leave they are entitled to. The application also counts as a payment request for the full amount.

Receiving the amount in instalments

The employer applies for paid parental leave after the employee has taken part of the leave they are entitled to. The application also counts as the first payment request. After the initial application, the employer can submit up to 2 additional payment requests through the employer portal (‘werkgeversportaal’) or via Digipoort. If this is not possible, they can use the Paid parental leave payment request submission form (‘in Dutch, Indienen betaalverzoek betaald ouderschapsverlof’) instead.

The second and third payment requests can only be submitted after the employee has taken another part of the leave.

We can also pay the employee directly. If this is what they prefer, they must let their employer know in advance. The employer can then include this information in the application for paid parental leave or in a future payment request.

In all cases, the payment for paid parental leave is made after the leave has been taken. This means the parent may have a lower income during their leave. The employer is not required to continue paying wages during the leave and does not have to advance the paid parental leave amount. We recommend that the employer and employee discuss payment arrangements in advance.

After we receive the application, we will review it within 4 weeks and the decision will be available through Mijn UWV. If the application is approved, we will make the payment within 3 working days. Payments are always made after the leave has been taken. This means that a payment can only be made after part of the leave has been taken and a payment request has been submitted, or after all the leave has been taken at once.

If the parent works for someone who receives a personal budget (‘persoonsgebonden budget, pgb’), the budget holder ('budgethouder’) can submit the payment requests. The SVB ('Sociale Verzekeringsbank') can also do this.

We cannot provide the exact payment dates because each parent takes parental leave in a different way.
