For parents who have an employer, the pay is 100% of their average daily income ('dagloon'). Find out more about how the average daily income is calculated (in Dutch).
For parents who are receiving an unemployment benefit ('WW-uitkering'), a sickness benefit ('Ziektewet-uitkering') or a salary-linked WGA benefit ('loongerelateerde WGA-uitkering'), the pay is equal to their current benefit.
Once the adoption or foster care leave ends, the parent can re-apply for their unemployment, sickness or salary-linked WGA benefit, provided they are not working full-time and are still entitled to it.
Parents whose income falls below the guaranteed minimum income ('sociaal minimum') might qualify for an UWV top-up benefit ('toeslag van UWV').
When applying for the pay on behalf of their employee, the employer can indicate who UWV should pay it to. It may be useful to have the pay transferred directly to the parent, for example if their employment ends during the leave.
We will pay the adoption or foster care pay to the employer in 1 or 2 payments.
Any letters about the payment will be posted directly to the employee.
If we pay the parent directly, we will transfer the pay on a weekly basis. This is the case, for example, for adoptive parents or foster parents who are receiving an unemployment benefit, sickness benefit or salary-linked WGA benefit.
If a parent adopts or fosters more than 1 child at the same time, the amount of adoption or foster care pay and the length of the leave will be the same as for 1 child. The leave lasts a maximum of 6 weeks, and a parent can only apply for adoption or foster care pay once.
If a parent adopts or fosters another child at a later date, they may apply for adoption or foster care leave and pay again.
